American Savings Education Council to Become Program of Funding Our Future Initiative

Employee Benefit Research Institute Will Continue to Support ASEC as Member of Advisory Board and Partner of Funding Our Future

WASHINGTON, DC – January 27, 2022 –The Employee Benefit Research Institute (EBRI) announced today that Funding Our Future, an initiative incubated in the Bipartisan Policy Center, will take over the American Savings Education Council (ASEC), effective January 27, 2022.

ASEC is a national coalition of public- and private-sector institutions committed to making saving and retirement planning a priority for all Americans. The organization grew out of discussions between representatives of the  Department of Labor and EBRI in 1994, as the agency prepared to launch its unique Retirement Savings Education Campaign with the Department of the Treasury and 65 public and private organizations. ASEC’s award-winning “Choose to Save” public-service campaign ran in print and broadcast outlets for two decades in all 50 states.

The Funding Our Future initiative, run out of the Bipartisan Policy Center, is an alliance of more than 60 organizations across the nonprofit, academic, trade association, media, and corporate sectors dedicated to making a secure retirement possible for all Americans. The alliance informs the public about barriers to retirement and financial security and highlights solutions and opportunities for communities and policymakers to make strengthening retirement policies a top priority.

Funding Our Future will assume the ASEC website, ASEC.org, which acts as a clearinghouse of information from government agencies and non-profit organizations seeking to help the public reach their savings goals and avoid common pitfalls. Funding Our Future will also administer ASEC’s “Choose to Save” campaign and its symposia, bringing together the private, non-profit, and public sectors to promote the value of savings. EBRI will continue to serve on ASEC’s Advisory Board.

“It’s been a privilege for EBRI to bring together government agencies, non-profits and the business community to advance ASEC and promote its mission of a more financially secure future for all Americans,” said Lori Lucas, EBRI President and CEO. “But the time has come to pass the torch to a new organization so ASEC can continue to thrive and EBRI can focus on its core competency of developing research and insights on retirement security, financial wellbeing and health benefits. I can’t think of a better organization to lead ASEC in the years to come than the Bipartisan Policy Center and its Funding our Future program, with its commitment to consensus building and improving Americans’ savings.”

“We look forward to leveraging ASEC’s strong foundation, built under EBRI’s leadership, to convene public- and private-sector partners and highlight challenges, as well as offer solutions, on all aspects of financial security,” said Kara Watkins, senior manager of the Funding Our Future initiative. “Now more than ever, we need to bring together leaders to tackle these critical economic policy challenges to help households and workers. We are excited to elevate this work through our coalition.”
